Fegley's Violin Shop has been in the stringed instrument business for nearly four decades, founded by the late James E. Fegley and his wife, Marjorie. We repair and sell stringed instruments including Violins, Violas, Cellos, Basses, Bows and accessories. We serve beginning through advanced students along with professional players. Among our clientele are many string players who are employed by major symphonies throughout the United States, Europe and Canada.
James became interested in working with stringed instruments at an early age. Starting in 1962 he began apprenticing with various prominent luthiers in the United States. He had considered a professional musical career while playing in area symphonies but his mechanical inclination and desire to work with his hands guided him to become a craftsman.
Fegley's Violin Shop was officially opened in 1979 by Jim and Margie Fegley from their home in Reading, PA. Fegley's Violin Shop began by providing services to the local stringed instrument community but soon the business expanded to provide quality work for students and professional players throughout the country. In 2004 in memory of Jim who passed away in 2003, a scholarship to a summer string camp was put into place for a needy child to attend each year.
Fegley's Violin Shop continues to serve our customers with honesty, integrity and prompt personal service. In 2006 Joseph P. McDevitt, certified Master Luthier, joined our company. Joe recieved his certification from the elite North Bennet Street School in Boston. While studying at the NBSS Joe made 7 Violins, 2 Violas, and a Cello. Joe also found time to work with various makers and restorers throughout the Boston area. He continues to expand his knowledge in the stringed instrument world by taking restoration classes with Hans J. Nebel, a very well known restorer.
As Margie and Joe continue to work together to fulfill the needs of the stringed instrument community, they plan to carry on their award-winning service and unrivaled loyalty to all their customers which has allowed Fegley's to remain a successful local business that has been around for nearly forty years.
